The Important Things in Life

March 27, 2020 2:55 PM Life
Prior to our buying a home we didn't have a piano and we only had a small portable TV with rabbit ears. But, that was about to change.Mom and Dad bought a 27 console TV and a used piano. Grandma and Grandpa had both so this was very exciting to me. I always enjoyed playing around with Grandma's piano. They started me on piano lessons with a very cute high school student. (Or, at least she seemed cute to me.) I soon learned that meant 30 minutes of practicing a day.& ......

I was about to discovered what it was like going to school, having a toddler brother and how to protect my toys. I had to learn what it was like to be at school 6 hours a day, while my toddler brother was home with Mrs. Hansen. One day I returned home to find many of my toy trucks without any wheels. How did this happen? I wondered. It never occurred to me that a little 1 year old could be such a destructive force. This was all new territory for me.Did someone break in to the h ......

Church had a program for children and it was called Primary. Primary met on Wednesdays at the chapel on the corner of Hess and Hawthorne Roads. Mom would take me and pick me up.They called Mom to be the Primary Chorister. She would teach the children songs and lead them in singing them. It was accompanied by lots of visual aids. The format of Primary was first, opening exercises, then we'd go to class with kids of our age, then we'd have closing exercises. The exerc ......

Having a baby in the house meant a big change is about to come. A lot changed in 1962:1) Mom returned to work2) Dad was now teaching in Pocatello and was home more3) Mark was growing and would soon be a toddler4) I was going to school at Hawthorn (they made the bottom floor an elementary school, but my school hours were different from Mom's work hours, so she didn't take me to or from school).5) A sitter was hired to watch Mark all day and see me off for schoo ......

We moved a few times because my parents were renters. It didn't bother me too much because home, for me, was Grandma's and Grandpa's.My dad graduated and got a job teaching at a new high school -- Highland High. They also bought their first house at 249 Teal Avenue. It was close to dad's new job and not far from where mom taught. (She taught at Hawthorn Junior High.)The house was one of three brick homes. It was the center one. On the left was a red brick home ......

I remember the day when my parents told me I was going to have a little sister or brother. They wanted a little girl, but I wanted a brother, and I wanted his name to be Mark. Ricky Bowser wasn't going to have anything on me.My Mom got morning sickness and was throwing up a lot. As a result, she seldom wanted to fix me breakfast. (I loved eggs and looking back, I'm sure it was the smell that she didn't want to deal with.) One day, she said, If you want eggs, ......

Because of the yours, mine, and ours, family I had lots of older cousins. I was the oldest of the last wave of cousins. In this younger group, in order of age, there's me, then my cousins Jeff, Todd, my brother Mark, our cousins John, Eric and Becky. When it came to older cousins, I had cousins older than my Mom!!! Keith and Wayne were both older than my mom, Paul was around the same age as my mom, and Andrea a little young. They were all children of my Grandpa's daughter ......

Meals at grandma's usually consisted of eggs with toast, bacon or sausage for breakfast. Occasionally I would beg for Mapo (maple flavored oatmeal), but most of the time when I had cereal it was Cream of Wheat or bran buds. Grandpa made his own sausage and it was the best. On special occasions, Grandma would make me pancakes and I just loved pancakes with Grandpa's sausage.Lunch was usually peanut butter and jelly, or peanut butter mixed with honey. Because Grandma would ......

Grandma had one rule when I'd go out to play and that was I better come home when she called me. In those days, you'd hear children's names yelled and that was the signal to that child to return home. The hills opposite their house were a good sounding board. Rising above the roof tops I could sometimes even see Grandma on the front porch. And, there were times I'd hear someone yell a name and I'd return home anyway asking, Did you call me?If the answer was negative I'd respon ......

There was only one bathroom in Grandma's and Grandpa's house. In the bathroom, besides toilet paper, a bar of soap, towels and washcloth was a pump bottle of Jorgen's Lotion, Grandpa's shaving mug and brush. The lotion sat on the toilet tank. From time to time I'd pump a drop in to my hands and spend the next eternity trying to rub it in to my hands. One day, there as a white button about the size of a dime. I put the button in my pocket. It seemed like no big deal.Later I pushed ......

I've always been intrigued to discover what makes things work. Grandpa's tool bench was no exception. He had some of the coolest tools. (I don't remember having any tools at home when we lived in Pocatello until we moved in to our own house.)One of the most intriguing tools Grandpa had was a bit-n-brace.I had seen Grandpa use it before, but I was determined to figure the thing out. I played with it for hours and days on end. When I finally figured it out, I put it t ......

Grandma and Grandpa lived in a very humble house on South Johnson in Pocatelo. As you entered their home, you entered the living room. Grandpa's desk was to your right, and the door to their bedroom on the left. The couch was next to Grandpa's desk, and across from it an old console hi-fi (short for High Fidelity - that was the big word for a record player). On top of it, a small black and white TV.Next to their bedroom was a bathroom that also joined the living room and a secon ......

One of my daughters when she was little used to ask at bedtime, Daddy, tell me a story about when you were little.I've procrastinated long enough and have decided to start writing these stories down for my posterity. It's something I wish my parents and grandparents would have done.Earliest MemoriesMy earliest memories were of living in Pocatello, Idaho. Most of those memories are center around my grandparents home on South Johnson Street. I spent most of my time there becaus ......

I believe in revelation. Specifically, I believe in revelation from God. I believe God revealed to men, called prophets in the Old Testament times. I believe the promised Comforter came after Jesus ascended to heaven, and that Comforter reveals to things to those who seek it.In my 60+ years, there have been too many things for me to mark them up to coincidence. From dreams coming true (both good and bad), still small voices prompting me what I should do, the administratio ......

There are certain things you can't take away from a person. I reflect upon Daniel in the lion's den. While the king forbade prayer, Daniel still trusted in God and prayed. Even though he was arrested, his faith in God proved stronger than the king's authority. The old saying, You can't take it with you, only applies to physical things. I believe we take our knowledge with us, and especially our knowledge of God and His works. There's nothing anyone can show or say to me t ......

n a season where it is traditional for people to list the things they are thankful for, I've decided to mention just one thing.I'm thankful for Sundays. Now, that may seem like an odd thing to be thankful for, but I'm going to explain why it is so important, and why everything else hinges on Sundays.Sunday is the reset button -- a re-boot -- a fresh start. It cannot be obtained with a hike in the mountains (as much as I would enjoy that, and as much as it would be refreshing), meditating in ......
